Dansk Julesang

Denmark's most popular Christmas carole or Dansk julesang is probably Hjt fra trets grnne top, which is sung while dancing around the Christmas tree. But ask any Dane and they will probably dispute that claim and mention their own favorite.

Below is a collection of eight of the most popular classic Dansk Julesang. If you are invited to celebrate a Danish Christmas evening with a Danish family, you will stand in good favor if you know a few of the words to these songs.

I hope this helps you enjoy your Danish Christmas just a little bit more ... happy singing / caroling.

Remember: When you dance around the Christmas tree, you hold hands with the person on either side of you and you dance clockwise around the tree as you sing the song. When you sing the next song, you change directions. Sometimes you will walk, sometimes you sort of skip, beware of stepping on gifts or knocking off delicate ornaments on the tree.

This can be awfully difficult if you have had a bit to drink during Dinner.

Now on with the songs ....

Hjt fra trets grnne top

Follow along with the video below to learn the lyrics to this popular Dansk Julesang.

Hjt fra trets grnne top

Hjt fra trets grnne top

strler juleglansen

spillemand, spil lystigt op

nu begynder dansen.

Lg nu smukt din hnd i min

ikke rr ved den rosin!

Frst skal tret vises

siden skal det spises.

-----

Se, brnlil, nu gr det godt

I forstr at trave,

lad den lille Signe blot

f sin julegave.

Ls kun selv det rde bnd!

Hvor du ryster p din hnd

Nr du strammer garnet,

kvler du jo barnet!

-----

Peter har den gren s kr,

hvorp trommen hnger

hvergang han den kommer nr

vil han ikke lngere.

Hvad du nsker, skal du f

nr jeg blot kan stole p

at du ej vil tromme

fr min sang er omme.

------

Denne fane ny og god

giver jeg til Henrik.

Du er strk og du har mod

du skal vre fndrik.

Hvor han svinger fanen kkt

Brn, I skylder ham respekt

vid, det er en re,

Dannebrog at bre.

-----

O, hvor er den bld og rar

sikken dejlig hue!

Den skal sikre bedstefar

imod frost og snue.

Lotte, hun kan vre stolt

tnk jer, hun har garnet holdt!

Det kan Hanne ikke,

hun kan bare strikke.

-----

Brn, nu er jeg bleven trt

og I fr ej mere.

Moder er i kkkenet,

nu skal hun traktere.

Derfor fr hun denne pung,

lft engang, hvor den er tung!

Julen varer lnge,

koster mange penge.

Deglig er den himmel bl

Below is the music to another classic Danish Julesang entitled "Dejlig er den himmel bl" which has 7 verses, but usually only 5 are sung. The two verses in italic are rarely heard - at least in my experience, but the complete 7 verses are included and you can decide how many you wish to sing. The words are in the video, but have also been written below so you can print them out if you wish.

Dejlig er den himmel bl,

lyst det er at se derp,

hvor de gyldne stjerner blinke,

hvor de smile, hvor de vinke

os fra jorden op til sig,

os fra jorden op til sig.

------

Det var midt i julenat,

hver en stjerne glimted mat,

men med t der blev at skue

n s klar p himlens bue

som en lille stjernesol,

som en lille stjernesol.

------

Nr den stjerne lys og blid

sig lod se ved midnatstid,

var det sagn fra gamle dage,

at en konge uden mage

skulle fdes p vor jord,

skulle fdes p vor jord.

------

Vise mnd fra sterland

drog i verden ud p stand

for den konge at oplede,

for den konge at tilbede,

som var fdt i samme stund,

som var fdt i samme stund.

------

De ham fandt i Davids hjem,

de ham fandt i Betlehem,

uden spir og kongetrone,

der kun sad en fattig kone,

vugged barnet i sit skd,

vugged barnet i sit skd.

------

Stjernen ledte vise mnd

til vor Herre Kristus hen;

vi har og en ledestjerne,

og nr vi den flger gerne,

kommer vi til Jesus Krist,

kommer vi til Jesus Krist.

------

Denne stjerne lys og mild,

som kan aldrig lede vild,

er hans guddoms-ord det klare,

som han os lod benbare

til at lyse for vor fod,

til at lyse for vor fod.

Et barn er fdt i Bethlehem

One of my all time favorite Christmas songs from when I was a child has always been "", which bring back fond memories of my Danish Christmas's back in the states. Every time I hear this song, it feels like Christmas.

A couple of notes, when you sing the song, the words that are unlined are sung twice, so for example in the first verse you sing " Et barn er fdt i Bethlehem ... Bethlehem, thi...."

Guess this is why I always loved this song, it was just so peaceful and fun to sing .. the verses are short and they all end with Halleluja. Hope you like it too.

Et barn er fdt i Bethlehem,

thi glder sig Jerusalem.

Halleluja,

halleluja!

------

En fattig jomfru sad i ln,

og fdte himlens kongesn.

Halleluja,

halleluja!

------

Han lagdes i et krybberum,

Guds engle sang med fryd derom.

Halleluja,

halleluja!

------

Og stens vise ofred der,

Guld, rgelse og myrra skr.

Halleluja,

halleluja!

------

Forvunden er nu al vor nd,

os er i dag en frelser fd.

Halleluja

halleluja!

------

Guds kre brn vi blev pny,

skal holde jul i himmelby.

Halleluja,

halleluja!

P stjernetpper lyse bl,

skal glade vi til kirke g.

Halleluja

halleluja!

------

Guds engle der os lre brat,

at synge, som de sang i nat.

Halleluja,

halleluja!

------

Da vorde engle vi som de,

Guds milde ansigt skal vi se.

Halleluja,

halleluja!

------

Ham vre pris til evig tid,

for frelser bold og broder blid!

Halleluja,

halleluja!
