I am a danish citizen and my spouse is US citizen thinking about retiring to Denmark (not working) age 79 and 81 .How difficult would this be ?

If you are a legal Danish citizen, it should not be hard but you can not expect to get government pension and many benefits may not be available to you. Denmark is more expensive than California so your $$$$ are not going to going much further unless you settle outside the major cities in the country. Even there prices can be very high.

Seems to be a late age to be thinking about relocating, since any expat relocation is to say the least "stressful" and takes time to adjust.

It's true that you don't need the passport to cross the borders but, you do need a passport to identify your self to a police officer if they ask you.
