Can I refuse to show my ID to ticket inspector?

by Matt
(Copenhagen)

I got an unpleasant situation today. I got a fine, but during I was getting it somebody behind me told me that I do not have to show my ID to the ticket inspectors beacuse I can refuse to do that. Is it true? And I have a second question, can I say that according to danish law I can refuse to show you my ID? And if I will say that I don't have my ID with me can that ticket inspecktor call for police beacuse I am in foreign country without a ID?

Hi,

You can not refuse to show your identification, but if you tell them you do not have your identification with you, they can not search you or your bags. They will ask for your personal nr/CPR nr.and they can check if that number matches you. If you are not a Danish resident or Citizen, they can make a Citizens arrest and call the police and make you pay on the spot. You do have the right to ask the inspector for identification to make sure they are real inspectors, yet the law is on their side and how far they decide to take the matter is in their hands. Refusing to show your id, usually makes matters worse and rarely quickens the process. If you do not have a ticket and you are caught, give them your id, pay your fine and learn from your mistake. Not paying for tickets only makes matters worse for all those WHO pay for the right to ride the trains and buses. Price increases are a direct result of people stealing rides.

It's true that you don't need the passport to cross the borders but, you do need a passport to identify your self to a police officer if they ask you.
