Olsen Restaurant: Store Kongensgade 66, Cph City; 12-01 (Thu-Sat 11-01.30); 3393 9195Successful restaurant amongst the "elegant" Copenhagen set who enjoy being pampered by the Danish TV cook. Peder Oxe successfully blends a traditional eatery on the ground floor with a terrace facing the square and a popular wine cellar that turns into a busy pre-clubbing cocktail bar in the evenings. Its traditional Danish atmosphere and good food (particularly the meat dishes) make Peder Oxe one of Copenhagen's fail-safe restaurants. Pegasus: Mysundegade 28, Cph Vesterbro; Mon-Wed 15-23, Thu 15-01, Fri 15-02, Sat 10-02, Sun 10-23; 3331 8050Located just off the Enghave end of formerly sleazy Istedgade, Pegasus is unusual in that it's a serious wine bar but with a remarkable selection of fine beers – around 93, in fact. A series of cozy and inviting rooms decorated in terracotta, open brickwork and funky art, Pegasus boasts both interesting nooks and crannies for intimate chats as well as outside seating for people-watching while quaffing your wine. The excellent range of dishes includes a large plateful (119kr) of your pick of their delicious tapas, plus fresh bread, garlic mascarpone spread, olives, pickles and other yummy bits and bobs. Plan B: Frederiksborggade 48, Cph City; Daily 10.00 - 22.00; 3336 3656Neither restaurant, café, bar nor music venue, Plan B offers a little of everything. Located in the heart of town between Nørreport station and the bridge to Nørrebro over the lakes, this award-winning café-bar is central enough but with a friendly 'village' vibe. Colorful and full of character, this venue has good music and atmosphere. Pussy Galore: Sankt Hans Torv 30, Cph Nørrebro; Mon-Fri 8-02, Sat-Sun 09-02; 3524 5300Café, restaurant and schnapps bar with one of the trendiest terraces in Copenhagen. Professional service, very “designer”, a landmark in hip Nørrebro. Excellent summer café. Qué Pasa: Bogholder Alle 65, Cph Vanløse; Closed Tue; 3879 3834For those who just aren't satisfied with the not-quite-authentic food served at Copenhagen's Mexican restaurants, Qué Pasa in the up-and-coming city district of Vanløse serves some of the best, most authentic Mexican food around. Operated by American Jon King, authentic touches such as burritos with shredded beef, real Mexican refried beans and King's own “queso blanco” cheese blend are a refreshing change from the norm. Vegetarians can also eat well at Qué Pasa, as King will gladly whip up nearly any vegetarian Mexican dish at the customer's request. The restaurant also has its own excellent American barbecue, available in both in sandwich and spare rib versions. Quote: Kongens Nytorv 8-16, Cph City; Mon-Wed 8.00-24.00, Thu 8.00-01.00, Sat 10.00-02.00 and Sun 11.00-02.00; 3332 5151The streets around Kongens Nytorv are already home to a myriad of quality restaurants, cafes and eateries, but until recently there wasn't much happening on the square itself. Recently, however, restaurant-café Quote opened its doors for the first time. It's a posh-looking place with a bar and café area, an upstairs with mezzanine-type seating and a side and back dining room full of big mirrors and classy décor, attracting upscale shoppers and local business people. Rasmus Oubæk: Store Kongensgade 52 Store Kongensgade 52; Open Tues-Sat 18-22; 3332 3209Rasmus Oubæk is a classically trained chef who headed up the kitchen at the two-starred Kommandanten as well as doing time at TyvenKokken, from where he poached his current commie chef and sommelier. His simple and classy restaurant, near Kongens Nytorv, is elegantly bereft of paintings and music, so the focus is on the food. Although its definitely not experimental cuisine, Oubæk serves sophisticated and “disciplined” food (in fact, the only noise you can hear in the restaurant is the constant beeping of timers in the downstairs kitchen). This is the full monty in terms of price, but the quality of the food, the subtle and attentive service and the intimacy of the space make is a good high-end choice for either a business dinner or intimate meal for two. Rebétiko: Borgergade 134, Cph City; Mon-Sat 17.00-24.00; 3391 9125A popular restaurant in the center of town, Rebétiko concentrates on quality ingredients and the provision of Greek classics at reasonable prices. Try the souvlaki - a range of tender grilled meats - and the rather good platters of calamari. House red 169kr, main courses 50kr to 100kr. Reef´n´Beef: Jarmer´s Plads 3, Cph City; Daily 17.00-24.00; 3333 0030With Australia being a continuing theme in the Danish media, we thought it would be a remiss of us not let the princess know what her options were here in town when it comes to good Aussie tucker. Mastering a balance between exotic and wholesome food is a challenge, but Reef´n´Beef goes to great lengths to demonstrate this. Reinwalds: Farvergade 15, Cph City; Mon-Sat 14.00-24.00; 3391 8280Reinwalds epitomizes casually elegant Franco-Italian and Danish cuisine in the city center. Not exactly buzzing in atmosphere, its sophisticated surroundings and attentive but not over-bearing service make it a good spot for that special occasion dinner. Restaurant Agora: Melchiorsplads 3, Cph Østerbro; Tue-Sun 10.30-16.00 and 18.00-23.00, Mon closed; 3555 3141Osti from Istanbul own this pearl of a Turkish restaurant in Østerbro. Forget everything you know about Turkish restaurants in Copenhagen, mostly consisting of cheap buffets. The small restaurant is situated in a discrete side street in Østerbro, with seating for around 20 guests only. With its light walls of painted bricks, wooden floors and ceiling decorated with a large chandelier and a fake star heaven, a fairytale atmosphere has been created. Turkish food that you will have to go to Istanbul to experience elsewhere. Restaurant Biblioteket: Toldbodgade 5, Cph City; Mon-Sat 11.30-16.00, Thu-Sat 18.00-22.00; 3332 3214Restaurant Biblioteket (The Library) is situated in a side street of the famous Nyhavn harbor, but it’s a bit harder to find than the usual tourist magnets of the area. It is also less touristy and cheaper than most of the other Nyhavn rip-offs. Biblioteket also serves open sandwiches for lunch every day, including two of our favorites: tartar and smoked eel. Restaurant Cilantro: Amagerbrogade 37, Cph Amager;Mon-Thur 09.00-23.00, Fri 9.00-24.00, Sat 10.00-24.00, Sun 10.00-16.00; 3254 4444Cozy restaurant/café in Amager with white tablecloths, black leather sofas and candles throughout. French inspired cuisine plus café style burgers, soups and salads. Features special nights of wine and cognac tasting. Restaurant Dansk: Store Kongensgade 90 , Cph City; Mon-Sat 12-22 (closed 15-18); 3312 9631Unfortunately, the original concept of Dansk, a smart and trendy Danish restaurant, just didn't seem to fly and it closed down almost as quickly as it opened last year. But the new year saw new beginnings with an overhaul of staff, a new chef and some renovation by the original architect. The concept is still essentially about Danishness – to provide traditional cuisine with a modern spin and an emphasis on quality and consistency, without necessarily aiming for the Michelin stars. The food is a bit on the pricey side but is unpretentious, rich and heavy-handed in a good way (if that's possible.) Restaurant Extra: Østerbrogade 64, Cph Ø; Mon-Fri 11.00-15.00 and 17.00-23.00, Sat-Sun 17.00-23.00; 3526 0952This recently opened restaurant at Østerbro features tapas in all kinds of shapes. Restaurant Extra is owned by Rasmus Kjær, who won the prestigous Chef of the Year 2002 competition. Everything from cutlery, plates and pictures on the walls are made by Danish artists and are for sale. Restaurant Firenze: Landemærket 27, Cph City; Mon-Sat 17.30 - 11.00; 3333 7005Restaurant Firenze has a stylish yet comfortable setting. Italian restaurants in the city are often of the “frozen dish, quantity over quality” variety, but Firenze stands out with its reasonable prices and high quality food. Restaurant Golden Prague: Gothersgade 39, Cph City; Mon-Sat 16.00-24.00, Sun closed; 3391 4712When entering Restaurant Golden Prague, it feels a bit like going to the home of the granny in Little Red Riding Hood. There are old pictures on the walls, dark wooden shelves with old books and wall-to-wall carpeting. Golden Prague serves large portions for a low price. The atmosphere is rather unique, but the food is nothing to write home about. This is perfect for a budget meal for big stomachs. Vegetarians beware. Restaurant Gråbrodretorv 21: Gråbrødretorv 21, Cph City; Mon-Sat 12.00 - 24.00, Sun 18.00 - 24.00, (Kitchen closes 22.00); 3311 4707Located on the picturesque Grey Friars Square, Gråbrødre Torv 21 is an elegant little restaurant with a lot of charm, few pretensions and very fine traditional Danish food. Lunches are excellent, with a selection of Danish specialties such as smoked herring, dill-marinated salmon, fresh salads and a range of lunch menus. Even Danish cuisine skeptics will enjoy the food at Gråbrødre Torv 21. Restaurant Inn: Store Kongensgade 90, Cph City; 11.30-15.00; 17.00-22.00; 3312 9631An Asian melting pot with an elegant twist. The interior is a cool melange of muted Asian colors, with a menu sampling the best of pan-Asian cooking. Restaurant Koefoed: Landgreven 3, Cph; Mon-Wed 11.30-23.00 (kitchen closes 21.30), Thu-Sat until 01.00 (kitchen closes 22.00). Kitchen closed between 16.00 and 17.30 daily; 5648 2224Restaurant Koefoed opened in late 2006 with the aim of providing a “sense of Bornholm in the heart of Copenhagen”. With a focus on the quality products from this little Danish island, this may be the city's first restaurant that aims at providing regional food in this way and takes pride in showcasing the simple, good-quality local ingredients that can be found on the island. Restaurant M: Store Kongensgade 56, Cph City; Mon-Sat 11.30-15.30; Thu-Sat 18.00-22.00, Sun closed; 3315 8577Owned by 23-year old Stine Weber Marquart, Restaurant M is one of Copenhagen’s newest restaurants. The style is minimalist, but charming and welcoming. Whether this is due to the friendly staff or the small details like the colored water glasses, black napkins and the red lamps is hard to tell. Restaurant PS: Store Kongensgade 52 Cph City; Mon-Fri 12-14 & 18-24, Sat 18-24, Sun closed; 3311 5017Fantastic nouvelle cuisine served in this little restaurant; food and wine served by people who really know what they are doing. Nice little lounge downstairs where you can indulge in good coffee and petit fours. Restaurant Philippe: Gråbrødre Torv 2, Cph City; Daily 11.00 - 24.00, kitchen closes at 22.30; 3332 9292French/Italian cuisine with a cozy old-fashioned Parisian atmosphere on picturesque Gråbrødre Torv. Restaurant Rimini: Amagerbrogade 2,Cph Amager; Daily 12.00-23.00; 3257 2819This Italian restaurant is tremendously popular among the locals for its lively feel and its cheap menu. Waiters literally run down the aisle between the tables every evening, and children enjoy the friendly staff and messy vibe. Don't expect much from the food, but it's ridiculously cheap. Restaurant Sapor: Thorvaldsensvej 2, Cph Frederiksberg; Daily 17.00-24.00, kitchen closes 22.00; 3535 2505Gourmet restaurant with a cozy, neighborhood feel, perhaps due to seating just 34 – reservations are advised. Changing monthly menu, with all starters/mains based on the same theme. Global, adventurous food. Restaurant Teaterkælderen: Under Det Ny Teater, Gammel Kongevej 29, Cph Vesterbro; 17.00-22.00 (Mon closed); 3325 7500Located in a beautiful old prop cellar, this restaurant is full of charm, pictures of actors from the last century and loads of atmosphere. Restaurant Valhal: Tivoli, Vesterbrogade 3, Cph City; 11.00-23.00; 3375 0740Well thought out Viking-themed restaurant. The food has a bit of a primitive touch to it, both in amount and in taste. Fun experience and very good for one of Tivoli's seasonals. Restaurant Vita: Store Kongensgade 25, Cph City; Mon-Tue 17-02, Wed-Sat 17-05; 3311 8011The true atmosphere of this elegant, antique venue comes out around midnight as Restaurant Vita is open long after most other city restaurants are closed. Restaurationen: Møntergade 19, Cph City; Tue-Sat 18-24; 3314 9495The expertise of the cuisine and the welcoming atmosphere make it worth the sky-high prices. Salonen: Sankt Peders Stræde 20, Cph City; Daily 12.00 - 01.00; 3311 2311 Salt Bar & Restaurant: Admiral Hotel; Toldbodgade 24-28, Cph City; Daily 12-17 & 17-22; 3374 1444Stylishly refurbished along with the Admiral lobby, the Salt Bar and Restaurant allies a traditional atmosphere with a sharp modern look. The building located across from the new Opera House dates from 1780, and its heavy warehouse wood beams and long history of housing sailors are in harmony with elegant designer chairs and other modern Scandi-design elements. The food is elegant, service is reliable and what's more, it's a child-friendly place too. Samsara: Herluf Trolles Gade 5, Cph City; Daily 17-23 kitchen closed about 22.00; 3332 3708Samsara is a quiet place, located in the ghostly residential area behind the Royal Theatre and Nyhavn, serving up eastern Tibetan cuisine at reasonable prices. Sans Souci: Madvigs Alle 15, Cph Frederiksberg; Mon-Sat 11.30 - 24.00, Kitchen 11.30 - 15.30 and 17.30 -21.00; 3321 7463Sans Souci is a truly authentic, old-school Danish restaurant, much comparable to Ida Davidsen's, yet intended for a different type of clientele. From the lamps and dark wood furniture to the pictures and portraits of the Danish personalities who have frequented the place since its opening in 1902, even the smell is redolent of a Danish grandmother's home. Sebastopol: Sankt Hans Torv 2, Cph Nørrebro; Mon - Wed 08.00 - 01.00, Thu & Fri 08.00 - 02.00, Sat 09.00 - 02.00, Sun 09.00 - 01.00; 3536 3002French café/brasserie style on Sankt Hans Torv with a great outdoor area and good brunches. Wine here is a serious affair as proprietor Jesper Boelskifte, who also owns the restaurant “Le Sommelier”, is president of the Danish Sommelier Association and ranked eighth in the world. Prices for a bottle range from 600 - 2000kr. There is a bi-monthly special where you pay 600kr for champagne, two courses, coffee, chocolates, wine and access to the club with free bar. Sofiekælderen became a local institution in the 1970s as a jazz-joint. A new team is giving the venue back its live-music feel, but with a liking for hip-hop and urban beats. Sofiekælderen won an award in 2003 as “best concert venue” in Copenhagen. Indeed, every Thursday, the live line-up is remarkable.
Sonoma Californian Grill and Lounge: Ved Stranden 18, Cph City; Sun-Thur 11.00-22.00, Fri-Sat 11.00-23.00 (kitchen only); 3312 2011This newly opened summer spot is owned and run by Californian Robert Spezzano and the kitchen is, according to him, inspired by California, Hawaii, Japan and Mexico. During Oct, closing at 21.00; 3312 580SpiseBilletten is a small and cozy café next door to a theater. It’s mainly a lunch restaurant but also serves their fresh and delicious food in the evenings before the theater performances. Spiseloppen: Christiania, Bådmandsstræde 43, Cph Christianshavn; Tue-Sun 17-22 (Mon closed); 3257 9558Spiseloppen is a bit of a culinary institution in Copenhagen, being known as the one place in the “Free City” of Christiania where you can eat fine cuisine. The menu changes every day, as does the chef. We do recommend a visit, because it's a one-of-a kind venue, but some find the a-la-carte main courses overpriced. The portions are tasty and generous, so a single main dish or two starters should be enough for a full-grown male. Sporvejen: Gråbrødre Torv 17, Cph City; Daily 11-24; 3313 3101Designed as an old Copenhagen tram, this burger restaurant with its super nice outdoor terrace is calm and without pretension. Stefanos Delicatesser: Julius Bloms Gade 36, Cph Nørrebro;daily 09.00 - 22.00; 3690 6058Decent eating possibilities are few and far between in deepest Nørrebro. Stick's and Sushi: Nansensgade 59 (takeaway at nr. 47), Cph City; 18-24 (t.a. 12-21); 3316 1407 (t.a.: 3316 1407)This place is always rammed with people, still after the initial sushi boom, because it's so good you have to keep coming back again and again. This is food with no compromise when it comes to freshness and taste. Sticks'n'Sushi Frederiksberg: Gammel Kongevej 120, Cph Frederiksberg; Daily 11.00-22.00; 3329 0010The new addition to the popular Sticks‘n’Sushi chain is found on the premises of an old bookstore and opened in April 2007. Bright and modern looking, the quality is good and the knowledgeable waiters are only too pleased to help you. Strandbar: Fabrikmestervej 10 (behind the Opera), Cph City / Holmen; 10.00-?; 3311 2908Pappa Hotel is fast becoming a trendy, Copenhagen institution based on the same concept as Luftkastellet and this year's newcomer, Halvandet. The food is simple and straight from the barbeque. Pappa Hotel holds parties every weekend, and there are volleyball nets, a dance floor and other activities in the 6000 square-meter area. Strassen: Istedgade 128; Cph Vesterbro; Daily 11.00-24.00; Thu-Sat 11.00-02.00; 3322 3241If you were blindfolded and dropped into Strassen without knowing where you were, it would take you six and a half seconds to figure out you were in the Vesterbro/Istedgade area. This laid-back café-bar was opened in February 2004 by the Bang and Jensen crew, with the intention of creating a younger brother next door to the famous Istedgade institution. Cheap and easy dinners in a lively setting. Stuen-th: Præstøgade 2a, Cph Østerbro; Tue-Thu + Sun 10.00 - 20.30, Fri-Sat 10.00-21.30, Mon closed; 3512 3040At last – a self-proclaimed family restaurant which lives up to its title. Stuen-th does not just tolerate children – it has been created with them in mind. There are two play areas, one for the younger ones and one for 5- to 12-year-olds, complete with computers, television and table and pens for drawing. There's a child-size toilet in the ladies, miniature urinals in the gents and child versions of everything on the menu; all healthy, freshly-made and organic and half the price of the regular dishes. SULT Restaurant & Cafe: Cinematheque; Vognmagergade 8 B; Cph City; Tue-Thu 12-22, Fri-Sat 12-23, Sun (café only) 12-22; 3374 3417In a way like wining and dining on a luxurious film set, Sult offers a large and open space which calls to mind something between a Madrid bar/restaurant and an enormous Soho (Manhattan) night-spot. Large luminous plates on the wall impart to the premises a somewhat art-deco atmosphere. SuperGeil: Nørrebrogade 184, Cph Nørrebro; Mon-Sun 8-02; 7020 8606Super design spot giving a breath of fresh air to Nørrebrogade. Everything is just “Geil”: “Geil” means something between cool, funky, horny and show-off. The menu is easy Italian food with a lot of pastas and salads. Sushi Saiko: Torvegade 22, Cph Christianshavn; Mon-Thu 11.00-22.00; Fri-Sat 11.00-23.00; Sun 14.00-22.00; 3295 0049Open just two months on Torvegade – Christianshavn's main thoroughfare – Sushi Saiko is an enticing Japanese joint and a welcome alternative to neighboring eateries. The traditional and contemporary-style sushi served up in this cellar restaurant is painstakingly crafted and almost too-pretty-to-eat. Most Japanese meals are not regarded as easy on the wallet, and although Sushi Saiko is no exception here, to be fair, the menu is so extensive and price-varied, that it is actually possible to put together a menu to suit most purses. Sushitarian: Gothersgade 3, Cph City; Mon-Wed 12-22, Thu-Sat 12-23, Sun 17-22; 3393 3054Sushi, noodles and teriyaki dishes is what they do here all day long, and they're good at it too. Trendy crowd, trendy surroundings and trendy food. Søren K: Den Sorte Diamant, Det Kongelige Bibliotek, Søren Kierkegaard's Plads 1, Cph City; Mon-Sat 11-22.30; 3347 4950Hip and classy restaurant on the ground floor of the Black Diamond, the new central building of the Royal Library. Tapasbaren: Dronningens Tværgade 3, Cph City; Mon-Wed 11.30-23, Thu-Sat 11.30-24; 3336 0770While Dronningens Tværgade's “Tapasbaren” may not seem overtly Spanish” at first glance, a very different impression emerges once you get past the bland façade. The true nature of the restaurant shines through when the food is served. While the Spanish way of eating is appealing in its own right, the friendly service at Tapasbaren makes it even more so. Tapasbaren is also worth a visit for a late snack before going out. Taste of Italy: Hotel Denmark, Vester Voldgade 89, Cph City; Mon-Sat 17.00-23.00; 3332 0290Gourmet hotel restaurant, expensive Italian with trendy minimalist design and a large menu to choose from. Taverna Philoxenia: Ravnsborggade 16B, Copenhagen Nørrebro; Daily from 17.00 - 02.00 (kitchen closes at 22.30); 3536 3640Greece is a country with many charms, some of them in the kitchen; let's face it though, the words “Greece” and “gourmet” aren't often heard together. And that's what makes Taverna Philoxenia such a lovely surprise. Here, tucked away on a Nørrebro side street, is a restaurant offering food of a gourmet standard, in a pleasant, unpretentious atmosphere. Tehran: Nørregade 22, Cph City; Sun-Wed 13-22, Thur-Sat 13-23; 3333 8020Entering Tehran feels as if you're leaving Denmark behind; flamboyant, garish ornaments adorn the walls and atmospheric, Iranian music plays in the background. For 100kr you can eat three courses at this Iranian restaurant; it’s certainly not for food snobs or sophisticates, but it harbors no such pretensions. It does, however, provide reasonably priced, good quality food with authentic Iranian ingredients and is an interesting option for those wanting to broaden their culinary horizons ethnically as well as those eating out on a budget. Terraneo: Kalvebod Brygge 5, Cph Vesterbro; Fri-Sat 18-23 Sun-Thu 18-22; 8833 9900Marriott Hotel's high-class bar and restaurant Terraneo is a business-type place specializing in the fusion of cuisines from the Mediterranean regions of Catalonia, Provence and Tuscany. The Natraj: Birkegade 2 Cph Nørrebro; 11.00-23.00; 3537 5751This is one of the few Indian restaurants that doesn't water down their curries to suit the local pallet. The Round Tower: Købmagergade 52 A, Cph City; Mon-Sat 10.00-17.00, Sun 12.00-17.00; 3373 0373The Round Tower is Europe's oldest observatory still in use. It was built with the purpose of star observation in 1642 under Christian IV (the Architect King). The observatory is open every cloudless Tuesday and Wednesday from 19.00 to 22.00. The rest of the week, The Round Tower is open as a historic sight and is Copenhagen's most centrally located roof terrace, overlooking the old city. The Taco Shop #3: Nørre Farimagsgade 57, Cph City; Daily 11-22; 3332 8330The three Taco Shops are a good port of call when you need some cheap eats and quickly. Fri & Sat until 23.00; 4585 3535In an area with a dense constellation of Michelin stars, opening a new lounge/eatery concept is no easy feat. Newly opened restaurant/lounge thirty five is not necessarily going for the stars, but aims to provide a chilled but elegant space to either eat, drink or pre-party in their sophisticated lounge area called the living room. The food concept consists of a regularly changing tasting menu based on that good old '90s trend of Pacific Rim/fusion cuisine. Thorvaldsens Hus: Gammel Strand 34, Cph City; Sun-Thu 11.00 - 22.00, Fri & Sat 11.00 - 22.30; 3332 0400There is a myriad of nice cafes with outside seating along Gammel Strand with lovely views of the canal, but Thorvaldsen's is definitely one of the nicest. A classic gourmet restaurant, Thorvaldsen's is an elegant venue both inside and out with its scenic courtyard area. The service and quality are excellent and the brunch is particularly good value at 79kr for a big plate of eggs, bacon, sausage, ham and cheese, fruit and a chocolate muffin. Top of Town Wine Bar: Radisson SAS Scandinavia, Amager Boulevard 70, Cph Amager; 3396 5858Enjoy the smashing view from the top floor of the SAS Hotel. The atmosphere is laid-back and the music policy is good, encompassing a wide range of soulful beats and pieces from contemporary R&B to palatable hip-hop.
